This chapel never had a stained glass window. The lack is compensated by the Burial of Christ. This monument is inspired by the mystery plays of the Middle Ages. The Burial of Christ gathers the eight traditional characters: Jesus, the mother of Jesus, "two other Maries", St John the apostle, Mary Magdalene, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus who hold the shroud. This grouping is "included in the set of windows" after the crucifixion of Jesus and certainly demonstrates a certain viewpoint of this period that has been long lost. For example, the woman holding the crown of thorns is depicted as a wife, but she is not Mary Magdalene who is evident at the foot. The wife of Jesus wears a turban also, indicating possibly Arabic origins. |
