This is a good view of the Neptune figure. Me and "Big Whitey," I guess. Even Michelangelo could have had a cranky day! There is a porphyry plaque set in the ground in front of the fountain. This marks the site of Savonarola's "bonfire of the vanities" and also the exact spot where HE was burned on May 23, 1498. Maybe that's why the fountain cheered me up so much: it reminded me that people like Savonarola and George Bush always get what they give... |
