At this point, the landscape changed somewhat. Under the initiative of a Dr. Leopold Schrotter, the Tourist Socieity was founded in Mali Losinj which began to plant evergreen trees. The trees were chosen for their resilience to cold winds and salty air and their adaptability to the soil of the island. (What soil there was!) Three hundred thousands pine seedlings were planted in the late 19th century and have grown into what is now known as the Losinj pine woods which contributed to the change in micro-climate attracting increasing numbers of visitors. Rich Europeans began to arrive and build luxury villas. The first villa was built in 1892 and given the name of Villa Adelma after the duchess Wurmbrand-Stuppach, wife of Baron Oeden Vaya. |
