Knight Records 1166 - 1549

This set of records begins in 1166 and ends in 1549. It's about 25 pages in a word document and any more than that is too bulky to import into my html program especially with images. So, I'll do the records in batches on separate pages.

Records are listed as: Year - Month Day - Country County Town/Parish - Type - Name of main individual. This is because the record list was created as a database and are organized for database sorting.

Record Types are:
Bap = Baptism;
Bur = Burial;
Mar = Marriage;
Will = Last Will and Testament;
Admin = Catchall for various types of public records, deeds, covenants, etc;
Chancery Suit = self explanatory;
Ox Alum = Attended and graduated from Oxford;
And a couple of odds and ends that should explain themselves.

Bap, Mar and Bur records are from the parish register indicated in the location field. I am giving what information I was able to get from the record which may have been an abstract of ancesty.com, or I abstracted it myself from an image; the ratio is about 30/70 on this type, respectively. There are exceptions, of course. I did the entire St Bride Registry, St Margaret Pattens, Kent Parish Registers, and read some others extensively. If the register page was available to review, I did. The exact day is given when available, and this is true for all other records except records from the American Revolution where I group them together for ease of comparison, though if actual dates are given, I include them in the abstract.

Wills: When there is an abstract of a will, nearly always I did it myself from the image of the document. If it is just a short notice, it is from ancestry.com's abstract and I can't certify its correctness, but I include it because that was all that was available for that record. If at all possible, I tried to get the image and read the will myself. Some wills I treat in a very brief way, abstracting just the bare essentials, usually because they were extremely difficult to read; others I include much more detail because they were easier to read and/or were just extremely interesting and merited the work to get more out of them. I've added notes where needed.

In some cases, I include a whole abstracted document from the National Archives in Kew because the names of many of the locals were familiar from Colonial Virginia and also because it gives something of the flavor of the times.

In some few cases with UK wills, I was unable to find a location for the individual in the record and so gave London or Canterbury depending on the type of record. Usually I note when that is the case, or it is obvious.

A few locations no longer exist. I either just leave it with the county alone, or give the parish or closest town or village. Locations are given in the modern spellings so as to be able to correlate with maps. Same with most names: I correct to the modern spelling for search purposes and if the old spelling was notable, include it following in parentheses.

Note: Apparently, being made a knight depended mostly on how much money one had and how much land one held.  There are numerous lists in the Kew archives entitled “Returns of persons holding £20 of land in chief who ought to be knights”. The amount of money increased as time went by, but it was basically a method of bringing the wealthy to the support of the king and had little or nothing to do with some abstraction called "nobility".

Below is a map of English Counties that you can refer to when reading the English records which is what we begin with. While the DNA studies may say that most of the Knights came from Cheshire area, there's a whole raft of them in the counties surrounding London, and in Kent, as you will see. Be sure to read the article about DNA and also The First Knight? As it happens, the oldest record I've found so far is from Norfolk and the second oldest from Kent.

1450 – UK Kent Borden – Admin – Robert Knight - Followed Jack Cade to London in the rising of 1450, which some historians consider to be the opening clash of the Wars of the Roses. (Harvey, I. M. W. (1991). Jack Cade's rebellion of 1450. Oxford: Clarendon Press.)

1455 – UK Northamptonshire Horton – Will - Richard Knight, Monk – (Probate Registry at Canterbury, 1396-1558)  The entry says that Richard Knight, a monk, is located in a place called “Selling, near Horton”. I find nothing about a “Selling”, only about Horton.  The village is 5 miles (8.0 km) SSE of Northampton. It is about 12 km NNE of Hanslope. It has a Norman church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene with a 13th-century western tower.  The church was closed in 2012 and the parish combined with Piddington.
The original medieval village and house were demolished to make way for the building of Horton House by William, Lord Parr of Horton. The house passed to the Montagu family in 1661.
Searching for a likely monastic house to which our Richard Knight could have belonged, the only one that appears likely is Grafton Regis Priory, an Augustinian hermitage founded 1180-1205 and amalgamated with the Abbey of St James’s, Northampton, before 1400.
Another possibility: Northampton Abbey was founded by William Peverel c. 1104.  There are records of several people of rank seeking interment within the abbey church, including Sir John Catesby in 1485 and Richard Woodville, Earl Rivers in 1491. The abbey was dissolved in 1538, and the monastic lands were soon granted to Nicholas Giffard of Duston. He built a mansion on the abbey lands, no doubt using stone obtained from the demolition of the abbey buildings.
The cemetery of the abbey was excavated in 2000-2001 and some 300 graves were found. Analysis of the burials shows a large number of elderly people many having suffered from trauma such as leg fractures, fused and/or deformed leg joints and advanced spine degeneration. One wonders, of course, if these were soldiers who became monks due to debilitating injuries?

Note: This will was extremely difficult and the solutions were not entirely satisfactory, but after going over it again and again, what I have transcribed appears to be what it says, confusing though it may be.

1515 Oct 17 – UK London – Will - Henry Knight – “My body to be buried in the Church of Our Lady of Bramley”; To the church of our Lady in Bramley bequests for several purposes, the poor, repairs, prayers, etc. Then, he mentions the Church of St Leonard; a bequest to what looks like John Cowper, then to John Wellys; something to an Anne Arundell; wills that Alice, his wife, have all his lands after his death for life and after her death, to go to son, William Knight;  Henry seems very concerned to get prayers for his soul because he mentions that again and again; then he writes “I would that my fiefs  (fioffs) make ___ (?)  to the said William Knight upon condition…” and then he says some more that is indecipherable but mentions St Leonard and his “lands and tenements”; he names his wife, Alice, executrix and Roger Eton overseer (?). Wit: Robert Oliver, priest; John Camp and Robert Hunt. (Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858,PROB 11: Will Registers, 1384-1566, Piece 18: Holder (1514-1517))
Note: If he names a county, town or city at all, I wasn’t able to discern it so it is a bit of a problem to figure out where this Henry Knight lived at the time of his death. There are a couple of churches of “Our Lady” in London, notably in Tower Hamlets which now includes Bromley-by-Bow which is a different Bromley from the one that was, at the time this will was written, the market town of Bromley.  This second Bromley was also known as Bromley St Peter and St Paul, and formed an ancient parish in the Bromley and Beckenham hundred and the Sutton-at-Hone lathe of Kent. There are other churches of St Leonard in Kent, notably at Hythe.
On the other hand, it is also quite possible that this Henry Knight is the Henry Knight of Knights Hill mentioned in the will of John Knight 1505 Surrey.  Note the locations in the maps below. It’s a difficult call to make so, until someone else can possibly decipher more clues from the will, I’m going to call it “London”.

Thus, the remaining possibility is Church Lawton in Cheshire; it is close to Congleton and Stoke-on-Trent and is an ancient parish, formerly part of the parish of Astbury.

https://www.cannockwood.org/history

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannock_Chase - The area gained notoriety in the late 1960s when the Cannock Chase murders made national headlines; the remains of three young girls were found buried on the Chase after going missing from areas along the A34 road between there and Birmingham. Since the nineteenth century, sightings of Black Dogs, Werewolves, British big cats, UFOs, black-eyed children and even Bigfoot have appeared in the local press. However no conclusive evidence has ever been produced verifying these claims, and they may best be thought of as forming part of local folklore.  In 2015 a woman came out to state she had been sexually abused from the age of 6 by senior politicians and other powerful members of society, often referred to as "The Elite". She claims this took place in the woodlands of Cannock Chase, as well as other locations in the midlands.  Perhaps there was some reason, in 1535, to call Cannock Chase “Cloud Wood”?
