1790 - Feb 24 VA Northampton – Mar - John Knight & Molly Floyd.  (VA MG REC 1700-1850, p. 430)

1790 - Nov 1 VA Spotsylvania – Admin - Ephraim Knight – Deed of gift to his children, James Knight, Lewis Knight and Eliza Ann Knight of same co.  To James Knight, 79 a. in Spots. Co, purchased of John Knight; also cattle, goods and chattels, etc. To Lewis Knight, tract of land in same co., purchased of Abraham Darnall; also cattle, goods and chattels.  To Eliza Ann Knight, stock, goods and chattels, etc.  Witnesses, Zachariah Knight, Gibson Morris, Elijah Knight.  (Crozier, p. 437)

Note: For a while, this record stumped me because it seems pretty certain that Zachariah Knight of Stafford VA was the same one in SC. As it happens, there is a second Zachariah Knight in Spotsylvania County, brother to Elijah, Uriah and Ephraim, and sons of John Knight and Winifred Garton; his life, with records, has a different trajectory. The name "Zachariah" was very popular among that group having come from Zachariah Garton, father-in-law to Ephraim Knight and John Knight, grandsons of Leonard Knight and great-grandsons of Capt. Peter Knight. Yet there is, most clearly and definitively, a Zachariah Knight associated with a John Knight and a Thomas Knight, who are not the same John and Thomas of Effingham. We know that John Knight of SC who was born 1747 and lived about 100 years, was the son of George Knight and Jean Dawson. But there is no birth record for brothers named Zachariah and Thomas in Overwharton Parish. In 1780, Zachariah is on the jury list in Beaufort SC. In 1785, Zachariah Knight, Thomas Knight and John Knight sign a Baptist petition. In 1789, Zachariah represented the Coosawhatchie Baptist Church at the Charleston Baptist Convention. In the 1790 census for Beaufort, there is "Zachary" Knights (sic), Thomas Knights (sic) and Stephen Knights (sic). Also, Zachariah has at least 7 children in his household! Also, despite the fact that Zachariah, John and Thomas all patented land on Bloodhill Branch in Beaufort in 1786, in 1790, John Knight is not listed. This could be a scribal error or error in transcription. It needs research. For the moment, it has to remain in a state of uncertainty.

1790 VA Orange – Mar - Molley Knight & Gilson Morris.  (VA MG REC 1700-1850, p. 479)

1790 - Nov 24 NC Randolph – Admin – John Knight - Hezekiah Dollarhide assigns patent for 400 acres on Little River to John Knight. (State Archives of North Carolina, Book 74 p. 267, Grant: 600, Entry no. 1441, File no. 563)

Note: A Silas Dollarhide is found in Edgefield SC in this same year in the Federal census along with Robert Knight and Elisha Knight. It’s an unusual name so there is likely to be a connection.

1790 - GA Effingham – Admin - John Knight – Land sale to Joseph Knight,  200 acres near Great Ogeechee. Witness: John London, JP. (Helmers 2014, p. 247)

1790 - Dec 6 GA Liberty – Admin - Zachariah Knight - Land warrant for 250 acres surrounding a swamp. (Liberty Co, GA Plat Book D, page 82)

Note: As you can see from the map comparison, Zachariah was not moving far when he went South to Liberty County GA.

1791 - Mar 1 VA Northampton – Mar - Betsy Knight & John Frost.  (VA MG REC 1700-1850, p. 421)

1791 - Apr 30 VA Northampton – Mar - Molly Knight & Severn Widgeon.  (VA MG REC 1700-1850, p. 446)

1791 - May 1 – NC Nash – Admin – Kinsmore Knight (Kinsman) - Mary Williams of Nash County sold to Kinsman Knight 25 acs. adj. said Knight and Joseph White. Wit: William Williams and Matthew Melton (Nash County NC Deeds 1777-1868, p. 252)

Note: It’s likely to be Kinsmore; he was the son of John Carter Knight and his wife, Ann, and was named in his father's will 1783, Nash County NC. This will was witnessed by William Williams and Jesse Powell.

1791 - Aug 23 VA Orange – Mar - William Butcher Knight & Frances Cave - (Fletcher, p. 98)

Note: This Wm. Is the son of John Knight and Hannah Marsh Webb Knight. One suspects that the maiden name of Hannah’s mother was Butcher.)

1791 - Feb 3 – VA Sussex – Will - John Knight - Of Albemarle Parish:  Wife Sarah Knight (first wife Elizabeth Stokes) my land for life ant then to go to my son John Knight
*  Daughter Crecy Pippin, wife of Joseph Pippin of North Carolina.  (Lucretia b. 1760 Albemarle Parish, Sussex VA)

1791 VA Mathews – Admin - Tax list – Selected: Gabriel Knight, Henry Knight, Joseph Knight, Joseph Knight JR., Richard Knight. (Mason 1946, p. 113)

Note: Mathews County was formed from part of Gloucester County.

1791 - Dec 9 – VA Henrico – Bap - Betsy Collins Knight – d/o Stephen Knight and Leah his wife, born. Baptized Bristol Parish October 2nd 1792. (Chamberlayne, 1980, p. 55)

Note: Was Leah a Collins before marriage?

1792 - Jan 19 – VA Lunenburg – Mar - Benjamin Jordan & Jane Jones – Jane was of Nottoway County; married by John Jones.  (Matheny & Yates 1967 p. 72)

1792 - Mar 12 NC Cumberland – Admin - Henry Knight - March 12. 1792 bought for 100 pounds from Solomon Perch (or Porch) 50 acres of land being part of 100 acres enterd by Frances Smith, lying on Neill McNeill's creek. The upper end of the said land joining Lisley (?) Signed by Solomon Perch in the presents of Cpt. Phillip Thomas, State of NC, Cumberland Co. Oct. Term 1792 Then seal proved by Phillip Thomas and addmitted to the record.   Signed John Ingram. (Cumberland County NC Register Of Deeds online – transcribed from image of document)

Note: Recall the problem of a John Knight married to an Anne in Sussex VA who had children: William, Benjamin and Wilson Knight, the last being born in Mar 1774. Then, there was the problem of aid being provided for “Knight’s Child” as recorded in the Albemarle Parish Vestry Book beginning in 1779 and continuing until 1786 at least, and possibly beyond. The child was eventually named: Henry Knight. Then consider that there was a land patent by a John Knight in Cumberland County NC in 1773 and then I've found Wilson Knight - not so common a name - in the Cumberland NC 1830 census, along with a Henry Knight of a similar age and a John Knight young enough to be a son of either. Wilson is alone in Cumberland in 1840. The name Wilson shows up again as a 16 year old son of James Knight, 38, in the 1850 Clarke, Mississippi census along with a Mark Knight, 32. BUT, it also shows up in the same census, alone, in Frederick VA as a 27 year old, this time with a son, James Knight. So here we have Henry Knight patenting land in Cumberland NC.  That would give him a birth year of c. 1770, so the connection is tracking. I still don’t know the origins of this group but as mentioned before, I think they could be Northumberland/Stafford Knights.  I believe that the Northumberland/Stafford/Spotsylvania Knights who descended from Leonard Knight and possibly other relations of Capt. Peter Knight, were related to the Sussex Knights who appear to have descended from Capt. Peter’s other son, James Knight via Isle of Wight and Nansemond Counties to Sussex VA and Bertie NC, then many of them congregating in Edgecombe NC.

1792 - Mar 28 - SC Darlington – Admin - Joseph Knight - of Effingham County (GA) to George McCall of Darlington Dist., S C, planter, 300 acres in former Craven Co., now Darlington District S C, granted John Knight 21 April 1775, lying on south side of Pee Dee River. Witnesses: John Moore, JP; William McCall; John McCall JP. (Huxford)

Note: In 1788, when John Knight patented land in Effingham GA, he may have then transferred his SC land to Joseph Knight who has since, also removed to Effingham and is now selling that land. Either that, or John Knight gave Joseph power of attorney to sell the land for him.

1792 - Apr 17 VA Spotsylvania – Admin - Richard Coleman - Of Spots. Co. to Robert S. Coleman of sam co. conveyance of slaves “in trust for the use of Fanny Coleman, Thomas Wootten Coleman, Rice Coleman and Richard Coleman, children of Richard Coleman afsd. [all under 21 yrs. Of age], Wit. Spilsbe Coleman, Mary X Aldiss. Decr. 3, 1793. (Spotsylvania County Records, 1721-1800, Deed book N. 1791-1794)

1792 - Jul 12 – VA Lunenburg – Mar - Woodson Jordan & Jemima Ragsdale - Married by John Neblett. (Matheny & Yates 1967. p. 72)

1792 Sep 1 VA Northampton – Mar - Anne Knight & Thomas Willis -  (VA MG REC 1700-1850, p. 447)

1792 - Nov 3 SC Beaufort – Admin - Zachariah Knight - With James Sweat and James Smart, delegates from Coosawhatchie Baptist Church at the Charleston Baptist Association conference.

Note: Even though he has patented land in Liberty GA, Zachariah is still involved with the church at Coosawhatchie.

1792 - Nov 5 SC Beaufort – Admin – Stephen Knight - Land grant for 310 acres. (SC Archives online)

Note: As mentioned above, in the 1790 census for Beaufort, Stephen Knight was listed along with Zachariah and Thomas. Zachariah had enough children at the time for one of them to be getting close to legal majority. I believe that Stephen is a son of Zachariah because, as the next record shows, Zachariah named Stephen as one of the executors of his will.

1792 SC Beaufort – Will - Zachariah Knight - Signed his will. Executors named were Stephen Knight, Nathan Smart, James Sweat.  Wit: Hamilton Smart, Solomon Knight, Moses Knight.  (SC Wills, served by ancestry.com)

Note: Solomon Knight and Moses Knight were sons of John Knight and Charity Latimore Knight of Stafford VA. This is another link back to the Knights of Northumberland/Stafford VA.

1792 GA Liberty – Admin - Zachariah Knight - Land grant for 250 acres. (Huxford Genealogical Society, Homerville, Ga)

Note: This is probably not an additional 250 acres, merely the grant for the warrant received 2 years earlier.

1793 Jan 2 VA Northumberland – Mar - Joseph Edwards & Nancy Lunsford - John Knight as bondsman. (Headley 2002, p. 122)

1793 - Feb 15 VA Henrico – Bap - Polly Cheatham Knight – d/o Josiah Knight & Milly his wife; bap. 7 Nov 1793, Bristol Parish. (Chamberlayne 1980, p. 55)

1793 - Mar 11 -  GA Effingham – Admin – John Knight - Zachariah Henderson to John Knight, Bill of Sale, undated, for three slaves, 60 head of cattle, two horses, four featherbeds and furniture, together with pots, pans and all other items of his furniture and household goods, given in payment of his bond (promissory note 10 Mar 1770) to Knight. No witnesses.  David Hines signs affidavit 18 Feb 1794 that he saw Zachariah Henderson sign the instrument. John Knight of Effingham Co., “Out of his love and good will” gives the above personal property to Mary Henderson by Bill of Sale dated 11 March 1793.  (Information on Some Georgia Pioneers - Maddox, GA (GAF281.L3.M3) p. 53, 55, see also Helmer 2014, p. 271 and p. 266)

1793 - Jul 2 VA Henrico – Bap - Billy Stephen Knight – s/o Stephen Knight and Leah his wife, baptized 7 Nov 1793, Bristol Parish. (Chamberlayne 1980, p. 55)

1793 - Jul 15 GA Effingham – Info – John Knight, Thomas James Knight, Joseph Knight – Signed Petition to governor from inhabitants of County saying the land court granted by fraud 1,000,000 acres to a few persons and many could not attend court due to poverty. (Telamon Cuyler Collection, Manuscript #1170 [Hargrett Library, University of Georgia]; Call Number: Box 42, Folder 9; Page Number: 1)

1793 - Aug 16 SC Beaufort – Admin - Stephen Knight – Land plat for 1,000 acres on Blood Hill Branch, Beaufort District, surveyed by Robert Shields for Richard Stafford. (Ser: S213190, Vol. 0030, p. 00241, Item: 002, South Carolina Dept. of Archives & History, online)

Note: Apparently Stephen Knight, probably the son of Zachariah Knight, has decided to remain in SC.

1793 - Sep 3 – VA Spotsylvania – Admin - Ephraim Knight - And Sarah Garton Knight his wife, and James Knight their son, to John Billingsly, 79 acres purchased by sd. Ephraim of his brother John Knight, in Berkeley Parish, Spots. Co., for 60 pounds currency. (Virginia, Spotsylvania County Records, 1721-1800, Deed Book N. 1791-1794)

1793 – Sep 17 – GA Effingham – Admin – Andrew Tucker - To Jemima Tucker, Trustee for her children, unnamed. Gift instrument dated Sept 17, 1793, of livestock, furniture, ½  of his corn and fodder, cotton and potatoes he to “have the liberty to eat of them while I stay on the place.”  He renounces claim to same now and after his death whether by matrimonial rights or otherwise.  Witnesses: John Knight, Miles Hunter, John Cook. (Huxford Genealogical Society, Homerville, Ga)

Note: Miles Hunter was the husband of John Knight's eldest child, daughter, Mary Knight. Miles Hunter died about 1797 after which Mary married John Stewart. The administration of the Hunter estate was granted to John Knight, Mary's father, and John Stewart, her new husband. (Huxford 1982, Vol. X, pp. 257-258) Here it looks like there has been some sort of family intervention between Andrew Tucker and his wife, Jemima. John's son, Jonathan, who was only 12 at this point in time, later married Elizabeth Tucker, daughter of Jemima.

1793 - Nov NC Edgecombe – Will - Joshua Bell - Mentions “mare and colt that I had for Peter Knight.” (Williams & Griffin 1956, p. 33)

King by Francis Coleman, in Spots. Co., etc, etc.  Wit Elijah Knight, Ephraim Knight, Henry Pendleton, Jr; Robt. Hart, Lewis Holladay. (Crozier, p. 463)

Widow of James Knight dissented.  Exrs. Refused to qualify.  Adm. Granted to Kindred Knight. (Will image served by ancestry.com)

Note:  Kindred Knight was James Moore Knight’s nephew, son of his brother, Moses Knight and Charity Carter Knight.  James Moore Knight was the son of John Knight and Isabell Carter Knight. It sounds like Priscilla Carter Knight was not happy with the terms of the will and the executors weren't happy about it either. Another family drama behind the scenes of legal records.

1794 - Feb 18 – GA Effingham – Admin – Zachariah Henderson to John Knight – Bill of sale, undated, for three slaves, 60 head of cattle, two horses, four featherbeds and furniture, together with pots, pans and all other items of his furniture and household goods, given in payment of his bond (promissory note) to Knight dated 10 March 1770. No witnesses signed, however, David Hines signs affidavit Feb 18, 1794, that he and Zachariah Henderson signed the instrument.   This is followed by: “John Knight of Effingham Co., "out of his love and goodwill" gives the above personal property to Mary Henderson by Bill of Sale dated 11 March 1793. “John Knight of Effingham Co., to Anna, Misey, Mary and Sarah Henderson, children of Zachariah and Mary Henderson. Gift of three slaves, Saturday, Florida and Sambo, 60 head of cattle, 2 horses, feather beds, furniture, pots, pans, farming implements, dated 30 Aug 1794. said Mary, mother of said children, to be Trustee.”  Witnesses: David and Nancy Hines. (Information on Some Georgia Pioneers - Maddox, GA (GAF281.L3.M3) p. 53, 55, see also Helmer 2014, p. 271; see also: Helmer 2014, p. 266)

Note: I can find no familial relationship between John Knight and this family. There was a Jonathan Henderson in Laurens SC who married a Rebecca Knight (b. c. 1811) and their daughter, Malinda, married James Perry Knight MD, who was a gr-grandson of Joel Knight who was the son of John Knight and Elizabeth Eppes.  This Joel was uncle to John Knight of Effingham.  So, a relationship could be in that direction.

1795 - Nov 9 VA Spotsylvania – Admin - John Knight - And Winifred, his wife, of Stafford Co. to Elijah Knight of Spots. Co. 32 lbs currency. 85 a., part of tract purchased by Ephraim Knight, decd., of Zachariah and Elijah Garton, in Spots. Co. Etc. etc.  Wit: Uriah Knight, Zachariah Knight, William Knight. (Crozier 1990, p. 484)

Note: This John Knight is the brother of the deceased Ephraim.

1795 – Dec 18 – SC Charleston – Will – John Knight – Whereas John Knight, late of Charleston, Gentleman, deseased, lately died intestate” the widow, Henrietta Knight is granted administration. (SC Wills and Probate Records 1670-1980, Charleston, Letters of Admin. Vol Qq, 1791-1797, image online, served by ancestry.com)

1795 GA Bulloch/Screven – Admin – Joseph Knight, Robert Knight, Thomas Knight - Petition to the state convention asking that Bulloch County be created from Scriven (now spelled Screven) and Bryan counties (part of Effingham Co. also became Bulloch) including signatures of the following: Joseph Knight, Robert Knight, William Cone, Thomas Knight, Aaron Cone, Barnet Mikell (McCall?), James McCall, William McCall, George McCall, Thomas McCall, John McCall, Aaron Cone. (petition obtained from Hargrett Library of the University of Georgia by Smith C. Banks. The Petition was transcribed by Evelyn Mabry. Several words are illegible. A few names may have been lost. Pages of the original Petition, now tattered, were sewn together in a scroll like manner. The Spirit of a People compiled by the Statesboro Herald Publishing Company.)

Note: John Knight has probably already left Effingham/Bulloch County as is suggested by the absence of his signature on this petition.

1796 - Aug 23 – NC Jones – Admin - Joseph Knight - And Collins Knott witness a slave sale. (Hargett Gwynn 1963, p. 205)

1796 - Aug 29 – NC Halifax – Info – Ephraim Knight - “My wife Mary having eloped or departed from my house, I forwarn all persons from trusting her, or giving her credit on my account, as I will pay no debt contracted by her or on her account.  Ephraim Knight.
